January is National School Board Recognition Month, honoring the men and women who serve on the nation’s thousands of Boards of Education.  Skyline’s trustee is Justin Henry. Trustee Henry serves South Dallas and parts of Downtown Dallas, Pleasant Grove, Deep Ellum, Uptown and East Dallas.  He also serves as Board Secretary.

Thursday, January 24th selected students and faculty were invited to a reception in Room 108, for Trustee Justin Henry.  Members of Skyline Teen School Board, Student Senate, Peer Forward, JROTC and other outstanding groups had an opportunity to meet with Trustee Henry to discuss topics of interest to Skyline High School.  “The reception with Trustee Henry was very insightful and it felt that he was really trying to hear from us as students.  We discussed what is currently happening right now within our school,” said Teen School Board member Luis Garcia.

Luis discussed ways to get students more engaged with education and ways to honor our educators.

Trustee Henry introduced himself and entertained questions, comments and concerns from the students.  He spoke about his determination to improve school for teachers and students.  The tone for the reception was pleasant and relaxed – the students were able to express their points of interest. “The reception was eye opening in the sense that I saw different perspectives from different classmates in clubs, clusters, and organizations,” said Dorian Mundy.

Mr. Henry wanted to know the student’s accomplishments and their college plans.  “Trustee Henry shared a little of his background with us and invited us to voice our concerns about Skyline and our educational future,” said Jessica Tillman. Information about college resources and scholarship opportunities were reviewed.

School Board Recognition Month has taken on a new meaning for this group of Skyline achievers.  “School Board Appreciation Month means that we should support and appreciate School Board members and the work they do for students around Dallas.  It also means we need to get involved in the development of our educational system,” said Dorian Mundy. Skyline presented Trustee Henry with a gift basket and a Skyline spirit shirt, as tokens of appreciation.
